Hurricane Day!
I never, ever thought that I would have a day off because of a storm in NYC. I spent the day
organizing the bathroom cabinets.

Hurricane Irene- 2011

Hurricane Irene!
How many natural disasters do we need to experience in one week? Well so far, it's two and that is more than enough.

We are in a flood zone, so people in our neighborhood took precautions. The only water we had to deal with, was the water the was leaking from the walls in our apartment.

Where's all the bread?

This hawk rode the storm out on a friend's fire escape.

This looks a lot worse than it is. The tide was high, but that is a part of the river that had a dock that collapsed a long time ago.

The subway was closed for 2 days, which is the first time it has ever been closed for a natural disaster. We also got Monday off, because there was no way for people to get to work.

Kid Quote 21 -August 24, 2011

Me: What did you learn about MLK?
S: I learned that he helped change the laws. He changed the bus law that said that black people had to sit on the back and white people had to sit on the front. He had to change that law, because if a black mom has a white baby, the mom would be in the back of the bus and the baby would have to ride in the front by himself and that wouldn't be fair.

Earthquake -August 23, 2011

We were sitting in our class having a community circle, when suddenly the floor started moving and the lights started shaking and rattling.....Yes, we had an earthquake. I looked at the kids and in a calm voice said "get up, go into the hallway, sit against the wall and don't talk." (I think they saw that I was freaked out, because they did exactly what I said).

My principal (who's from California) came rushing down the hall looked at us, laughed and said "For earthquakes you sit under a table."

I said "I'm from Florida, we run away from windows."

Our Word Wall!

Weekend in NY (August 19, 2011)

Havana Outpost celebrating the first week of school.

We were having a grand old time, when suddenly the sky got dark and a huge storm rolled in. It picked up the tent next to us and blew it across the street. Supposedly someone got hit by the tent.

The best breakfast sandwich in NY, Peter Pan Doughnuts in Greenpoint.

Weekend in NY (August 5, 2011)

I got out of the shower, looked around the bathroom and realized that I had had enough!I was sick and tired of the taped together sink and the yellow stained linoleum floors. We were going to go to Home Depot and we were going to fix up the bathroom.

We bought linoleum a) because it's cheap and b) because we rent our apartment and we don't plan on staying here forever. As we started to put the linoleum over the linoleum that was already on the floor, we realized that the old linoleum wasn't even stuck to the floor. We took off the old floor in about 2 minutes. The hubbs spread the glue and half an hour later, he installed the floor. The floor stuck right away, so were we were able to install the sink and toilet right away. The entire project (minus the trip to Home Depot and soup dumplings in Chinatown), took two hours.

Although I was upset because we needed to pack our entire classes in boxes, I am excited because we get to organize everything. When the school year started last year, our class was a mess and we really couldn't get it organized. This year we are taking our time making sure everything has a set place.

Summertime is over! I started work today. Sad, because I never feel like our summer is long enough. Excited because we will have 30 new first graders in two weeks.

We had a cool team building activity, where we were divided up into groups and we had to paint a section of a canvas. We put our canvases together and this was the finished product.
